Exploration of Forms: Kara Davis / Mother Tongue

UC Berkeley's Theater, Dance & Performance Studies Department presents a series of dance/movement workshops this Fall titled, Exploration of Forms. Each workshop is open to the public and provides a dance/movement experience accessible to all levels. Our first artist in the series is Kara Davis, who will be leading a workshop titled, Mother Tongue.

Improvisation-Into-Composition: Creative Listenership Workshop:
Mother Tongue, the title of this particular improvisation modality practicum, refers to the multiple ways a human body can sense and express itself outside the linguistic, religious, gendered, and cultural tyrannies one inherits at birth. No dance-training is required for this workshop.

This improvisation workshop begins with a series of warm-up exercises intended to heighten one's creative impulses, physical intelligence, and energetic connection with the other participants. Participants will engage in structured improvisation exercises designed to enhance consensus in the compositional decision making process. By engaging the intelligences of the dancing body with the thinking mind, this workshop connects the creative ideas with the physicality of intuition. Attendees will be given tools to disrupt habitual tendencies, allow new creativity to emerge, and deepen creative connectivity with one another.
